Protecting financed vehicles: tracking for lenders and SACCOs

How banks, microfinance institutions and SACCOs in Kenya use GPS tracking, tamper alerts and immobilisation to keep visibility over financed vehicles.

Key takeaways
  • Install trackers as part of the financing process.
  • Tamper and power-disconnection alerts flag risk early.
  • Immobilisation must follow clear, safe procedures.
  • Disclose tracking clearly in financing agreements.

Why lenders track financed vehicles

Vehicle and asset finance helps businesses and individuals across Kenya grow. For lenders, the financed vehicle is the security. Knowing where it is, and being alerted to signs of risk, supports better portfolio management and recovery when needed.

Install at the point of financing

The simplest approach is to make tracker installation part of the disbursement process. The vehicle is fitted and tested before release, and the lender's team can see it in the platform from day one.

Grouping vehicles by branch, product or officer makes it easy for each team to see the vehicles they are responsible for.

Alerts that matter to lenders

  • Power disconnection: may indicate someone is trying to disable the tracker.
  • Movement outside agreed areas: using geofences where the agreement limits use.
  • Long periods offline: worth following up with the borrower.
  • Unusual patterns: sudden changes in where or how the vehicle is used.

Immobilisation, used responsibly

Some trackers can be connected to an immobiliser that prevents the engine from starting, or disables it remotely. This is a powerful tool and must be used with clear internal procedures and safe-use guidance, so it never creates a road safety risk.

Most lenders use immobilisation as a last step, in line with their agreements and recovery procedures.

Be transparent with borrowers

Tell borrowers that the vehicle is tracked, explain why and how the data is used, and include this in the financing agreement. Transparency supports good customer relationships and is in line with Kenya's Data Protection Act, 2019.
